Paintings that fuse Ab-Ex gesture, Taoist ritual, and Gutai energy.

Jon Tsoi. Slicing Space / Performance at WhiteBox 2015
Part of Two Visionary Practices in Resonant Dialogue — Bridging Mid-Century Abstraction and Contemporary Taoist Practices

Jon Tsoi, Untitled XVIII, Acrylic, Yute ropes, on canvas, 1995. 40”x40’ in.
Abstract Expression vis-à-vis the Tao introduces Jon Tsoi’s compelling Slicing Space series—a visceral exploration of painting as both performative ritual and philosophical inquiry. Rooted in Taoist principles and the ethos of Abstract Expressionism, Tsoi’s blindfolded, slashing and mending technique involves binding the canvas with rope, creating a dynamic interplay between control and chance. Audience participation plays a key role, inviting viewers to suspend visual senses and pour pre-mixed paints chosen through an aura methodology—a ritual that fosters intuitive, shared, creative energy. This process resonates with postwar avant-garde performance art, notably the Gutai Art Association’s pioneering fusion of painting and performance as a pathway to spiritual and psychological liberation. As a licensed acupuncturist, Tsoi integrates healing modalities into his artistic practice, positioning each piece as an intimate convergence of mind, body, and spirit. A live performance is currently under consideration to enhance the exhibition’s immersive experience.
